Frequently Asked Questions
Before your first therapy session:
-
I generally like to use this time to get some historical information from you that may help give me an idea to what brought you to therapy. This is where you can start your story and we work on understanding what has shaped you as a person up to this point.
-
“Therapy” means a lot of moving parts: the therapist, the client, your ability to be a good fit with each other, the type of therapeutic modalities used, your readiness to work on the areas of your life that you feel are not functioning as you would like them to be. That is to say, the therapeutic process will sometimes be tough, hold secrets, have laughter, and be relieving.
-
Your session is booked for 60 minutes, however most sessions will go from 50-55 minutes. Since there is more than likely another client booked before and after your session, I try to keep the schedule running on time. If you feel you would benefit from a longer session, we can discuss options for further scheduling or look at doing an intensive session.
-
Short answer…Yes. However, as a licensed clinical mental health counselor, I do have a Duty to Warn, in the event you feel you may be of harm to yourself or another person. If I feel this to be a concern, we will discuss next steps before the end of your session.

Under federal law, clients who pay privately for healthcare services have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate outlining the expected cost of services. This estimate helps you understand the potential cost of therapy based on the information available at the time it is provided. Because therapy needs may change, the estimate is not a contract and does not obligate you to a specific number of sessions.
If you have any questions about fees or the Good Faith Estimate, you are always welcome to ask so we can make sure you feel informed and comfortable moving forward.
During the therapy process:
-
The number of therapy sessions needed to see progress depends on your goals, the concerns you want to address and quickly you may respond to the therapeutic work. Some people notice meaningful change after a few session when focusing on a specific, time-limited concern—-such as managing a phobia, preparing for a life event, or learning a single new skill. Others benefit from months or longer of regular therapy to uncover and change deeper patterns, process complex experiences, or work through trauma.
When we begin, we’ll agree on an initial plan and set clear, realistic goals. We’ll review your progress together at agreed intervals and adjust the plan as needed. This includes discussing pave, expected outcomes and any signs that might indicate it’s time to change approaches——such as trying a different therapy style, increasing or reducing session frequency, or involving additional supports.
-
Many people come to therapy because talking about certain experiences feels overwhelming, painful, or even impossible. There is never any pressure to share before you're ready. We will move at a pace that feels safe for you, using approaches that help you build comfort, trust, and confidence as we work together.
-
Yes. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Many people come to therapy with a general sense that something feels "off"—they may feel overwhelmed, disconnected, anxious, emotionally exhausted, or simply not like themselves, without knowing exactly why.
Therapy provides a supportive space to slow down, explore your experiences, and better understand what may be contributing to how you're feeling. Together, we can identify patterns, uncover underlying concerns, and develop a path forward that feels meaningful and aligned with your goals.
-
Feeling emotional after a therapy session is completely normal, especially when you've explored difficult experiences or long-held emotions. Therapy can bring awareness to thoughts and feelings that have been pushed aside, and it may take a little time for your mind and body to process what came up during the session.
You may notice yourself feeling tired, reflective, relieved, or more emotional than usual for a day or two afterward. We will talk about ways to care for yourself between sessions, and we'll always move at a pace that feels supportive and manageable. Your emotional well-being is important, and you never have to navigate the process alone.
